Q&A with Sandy and Matthew

How long have you been training at Capital?  What did you do before, if anything?

Sandy: I’ve been training at Capital since late March 2014. For years, walking was my primary exercise.

MotM June2014Matthew:I have been training at Capital for 2 months. Before training at Capital, I dabbled in and out of working out on my own.

How did you get first interested in your fitness?

Sandy: Years ago through walking, I discovered the positive effect, both mentally and physically, that comes from regular exercise. Over the years it’s become obvious to me through reading and talking with fitness minded individuals that I could benefit immensely from adding strength training to my routine.

Matthew: My competitive nature drove me to training to become more athletic than people who were naturally more athletic than me.

How do you find the time to get your workouts in so consistently?

Sandy: I’ve made workouts a habit and schedule appointments and life around my workouts. Exercise will never find its way on my schedule without planning, I make it a priority.

Matthew: I make my workouts a high priority and schedule them ahead of time so I can schedule around them.

What’s your favorite thing about working out with us at Capital?

Sandy: Kat is an amazing trainer! She’s knowledgeable, motivating and fun. I have never been involved with strength training before, and Kat eliminated the intimidation factor for me. She designs workouts to fit my needs and goals and keeps them interesting. All of the trainers at Capital make it a very supportive, encouraging and helpful environment.

Matthew: I like how I’ve been pushed hard to make progress while being in a comfortable and friendly environment that I also learn a lot in.

What is your favorite and least favorite exercise?

Sandy: Currently my least favorite is single leg & weighted hip thrusts. This changes frequently and is usually the exercise I struggle with the most. My favorite exercise changes frequently too and is usually one that has at some point been my least favorite but now I’m conquering. Push-ups and pull-ups are current favorites.

Matthew: My favorite exercise is back squat because of how much progress I’ve made. My least favorite exercise is the sled push.

What tips would you offer someone who wanted to get started on their fitness, but was nervous to do so?

Sandy: Take the plunge! Your only regret will be that you didn’t try it sooner.

Matthew: I would tell them to just go for it, as long as they really want to work on their fitness, they have nothing to lose.
